Inhalatorium

Health resort | Szczawnica Zdrój

Explore Place

The Inhalatorium is a historic building in the modernist style, which is a must-see for anyone visiting Szczawnica or walking along the blue trail Szczawnica ⇔ Sewerynówka. The attraction is not only the stunning appearance of the building itself, but also the picture-perfect surroundings guaranteed by the Upper Park. However, it must be remembered that this is first and foremost a sanatorium offering numerous therapeutic treatments, specialist advice and accommodation, making it an ideal stop before returning to the trail or a place to rest and improve your health.

  • Building design

The Inhalatorium project was created by Stanislaw Dziewolski, who was also the owner of nearby Kroscienko.

  • Weapons composition

During the Second World War, weapons and ammunition were hidden in the attic of the Inhalatorium. Due to the threat of the Germans/III Reich blowing up the facility, most of the equipment was moved to another location.

  • Precursor

Before the sanatorium was built, the oldest spa house in Szczawnica, the so-called Castle, stood on its site, where Aleksander Fredro, among others, was treated.

  • Historic architecture

The building was built in a modernist style in the 1930s, and is also located in the Upper Park, which is inspired by French royal parks.

Inhalatorium

Health resort | Szczawnica Zdrój

History of the Inhalatorium

In 1936, Count Adam Stadnicki opened the Inhalatorium as one of the most modern sanatorium facilities of its time. It earned this title because of its innovative equipment, which included pneumatic chambers. The year 1948 brought with it the nationalisation of the facility, and only eight years later the Szczawnica State Spa Company was established. Following its decision, treatment at the sanatorium began to focus on the treatment of occupational diseases of miners and steelworkers. In 2005, the spa in Szczawnica returned to the hands of Adam Stadnicki's heirs.

Currently

Hrabie Stadnicki, when opening the Inhalatorium, gave it, as he wrote on a plaque in the hall, "to the public seeking health". This idea has also guided his descendants - the Mankowski family, who continually invest in expanding the offer of treatments and enriching the cultural life of Szczawnica. At present, the sanatorium consists of a natural treatment facility, famous for its brine and brine inhalations, and a Health Clinic providing specialist advice.

    Treatments

It is not only the beauty and history of the Inhalatorium that it stands for.

    Before the adventure begins

The "Inhalatorium", which consists of the Natural Treatment Facility together with the Spa Outpatient Clinic, offers patients a wide range of treatments and specialist advice. When starting out on an outpatient treatment adventure, it is necessary to consult a doctor, as it is he who will select the appropriate treatments based on the patient's state of health. After that, all that remains is to heal and relax. It is important to remember that treatment in Szczawnica is aimed at treating diseases of the respiratory system and the musculoskeletal system.

    For everyone something good

The list of treatments itself is available on the website of Uzdrowisko Szczawnica, so here we will focus only on some that stand out. The first treatment worth mentioning is the mineral bath, in which 2-3% brine is used. It is recommended for people with diseases of the respiratory tract, joints or certain dermatological conditions. Another noteworthy treatment, if only by its name, is the pearl-ozone bath. It has a relaxing effect on the muscles, stimulates circulation and oxygenates the skin. It is also worth mentioning treatments based on interference or pulse currents, which focus on reducing muscle tension. In view of the sizeable range of treatment modalities, it is not surprising that Szczawnica is included in lists of the best spas in Poland published by various services.

Detailed descriptions of the treatments can be found on the Inhalatorium website.

    Concert shell

That is, where the music comes from.

    Echo of the past

The Concert Hall was built in 1950 so that visitors could pass the time listening to musicians performing in it. Since then, if possible, a band or orchestra has been hired every season to give a concert every evening. Sometimes there have been interruptions of several years, as in recent years as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. There is currently no information regarding the resumption of regular performances, but there are constant concerts as part of various festivals organised by the city.

    Appearance also counts

The building itself was built of wood on stone foundations. The white interior of this building allows for extended sunlight. It has also been topped with simple wooden folk-style finishes, which gives it a unique feel and makes it fit in with its surroundings.

    Statues

    Jozef Szalay forever remembered

    Unusual adventures

The monument is located between Swiss Hill and the Inhalatorium. It is now a copy of the bust of Józef Szalay created by Krystyna Antoniak, as the original, cast in bronze by Alfred Daun, was stolen in 1999. Fortunately, it was found in 2016 in the Office of Found Things in Ozarow Mazowiecki. This happened, thanks to a student from the Jagiellonian University who was writing her thesis on Alfred Daun. The sculpture was eventually returned to Szczawnica.

    Why was it commemorated?

Jozef Szalay was one of the owners of Szczawnica. It was because of him that it became a spa town. It all started with collecting and testing samples of healing waters with the help of Jozef Dietl. Szalay then sent them to doctors with a request to disseminate the resort to their patients. The effects of his work were and still are visible to the naked eye.

    Counts' Spa Chapel

Vocations of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Need is the mother of initiative

The chapel was founded and designed, known to all inhabitants of Szczawnica, by Jozef Szalay, in order to shorten the way to the church for the visitors of that time. It was officially consecrated by Rev. Maciej Szafranski in 1847. Its furnishings were assembled from the personal collections of the founder, his friends and visitors to the spa. The Neo-Gothic style and the altar of the Saviour of the World from 1848 made the chapel listed in the register of monuments of the National Heritage Institute.

    French staircase

    So useful and delightful

    Inspiration in practice

No one would be surprised to see this type of staircase in a French chateau or Hollywood production. It is very easy to imagine a festively dressed lady slowly walking up the granite steps along the balustrade. The fact that this can be so easily visualised is proof of the success of the designers and architects who were inspired by the staircase to the Sacre-Coeur Basilica in Paris when building it.
