Wodospad Zaskalnik

Explore Place

Zaskalnik is a waterfall located on Partyzantów Street in Severynówka, a district of Szczawnica lying away from the main routes and traffic. The cascades are situated in a basin and separated from the road by a rocky wall with steep stairs. However, it is worth the effort and the demanding descent, as the views are impressive regardless of the time of day or year. The water falling from a height of 5m has, over hundreds of years, gouged a considerable depression and forms a beautiful natural pool surrounded by giant boulders.

  • Black Route

The black trail connecting the shelter under Bereśnik with Sewerynówka runs next to Zaskalnik. It is the fastest way from the upper part of Szczawnica to the waterfall.

  • Blue Route

The waterfall is also located in the vicinity of the blue trail, which starts in the centre of Szczawnica and heads towards Przehyby. The route leads mainly along forest roads suitable for cars and bicycles, but it also has sections that can only be walked.

  • Ciuchka

A blue-and-yellow choo-choo runs regularly between Szczawnica's Dietl Square and the waterfall. It is a kind of bus connecting the most popular attractions of Szczawnica. You can check the timetable on the spa's website.

  • Photo sessions

The waterfall is a frequent choice of honeymooners and families for a photo session. Local photographers offer unique and beautiful souvenirs from the Pieniny Mountains in the form of photographs against the backdrop of the Zaskalnik cascades.

Sopotnicki Potok

The cascade feeds the Sopotnicki Potok, which flows from the western slope of Przechyba. Before the stream reaches the cascades, it travels a long way along the slopes of Czeremcha, Kuba and Dzwonkówka. In addition, a few hundred metres before Zaskalnik, it joins the Hawk Creek and the Under Mountain Creek. A kilometre behind the waterfall, the stream flows into the Grajcarek at Główna Street.

Controversial water intake

300 m above the waterfall is one of the intakes of Szczawnica, which provides water for the residents of Severynówka. In the early 2000s, the quality of the water coming from this location (as well as from other intakes) was criticised. Consequently, between 2007 and 2013 the station was modernised and equipped with environmental protection tools such as fish ladders. Thanks to the investment in the water intake at Sewerynówka, it meets all EU standards, and the residents, visitors and spa guests of Szczawnica can enjoy safe tap water.
