Dworek Gościnny in Szczawnica is a theatre and hotel building, the foundations of which were laid in 1875 on the initiative of the founder of Szczawnica, Józef Szalay. The building was ceremonially opened in 1884 and to this day (admittedly with interruptions) serves the town as a multifunctional cultural and business centre.

  • Unique architecture

The Guest House has been given a distinctive style, typical of the region. It was built of larch wood and has numerous galleries, dormers and turrets.

  • Cultural meeting place

At the turn of the 20th century, Dworek Gościnny became the centre of cultural and entertainment life in Szczawnica. Famous personalities such as Helena Modrzejewska, Ludwik Solski or Maria Konopnicka visited the place, giving lectures, readings, and staging their plays.

  • Fire and reconstruction

In 1962, a fire broke out in the Guest House Manor, destroying the wooden structure. However, thanks to the efforts of the heirs of Count Adam Stadnicki and the local authorities, the Manor House was rebuilt and reopened in 2011.

  • Jazz bar

In the lower part of the Manor House is the club restaurant Jazz Bar serving international cuisine with elements of regional cuisine. You can eat here not only a burger, but also sushi or crème brûlée!

Creation

The Guest House (or Pieniny Salon, Kursalon) was built on the initiative of Józef Szalay, who unfortunately did not live to see the opening of the building. The construction was completed by the Krakow Academy of Arts and Sciences, to which Szalay bequeathed the Szczawnica Spa facilities.

Style

The upper part of the Manor House was mainly built of larch wood, the building is covered with shingles and has numerous galleries, porches, dormers and turrets. The original building housed a ballroom for 500 people, an auditorium, piano and billiard room, a reading room and even a hairdressing salon and two shops.

Building Fire and Reconstruction

On 20 October 1962, after 10am, a fire broke out in the Guest House, completely consuming the building, with only the brick foundations remaining. For many years there was no chance of reconstruction due to the enormous cost. It was only in 2005 that Count Adam Stadnicki's grandson Andrzej Mankowski decided to reclaim his grandfather's property and undertook the reconstruction. In 2011, the Guest House was put back into use in a new guise: it was decided to enlarge the volume of the building by a third, to equip the interior with modern technology and at the same time to preserve the unique atmosphere of the place.
