The promontory on the Dunajec River is an island located next to the Orlica mountain hostel, at the mouth of the Grajcarek River into the Dunajec. Interestingly, only the southern half of the promontory is in the Pieniny National Park - the northern half is in Szczawnica. At a high level of the Dunajec River, the place becomes an island and is surrounded by water even from the tourist path. However, this does not prevent one from reaching the promontory, as it is connected with Szczawnica by a wooden bridge.

  • River noise

Compared to the rest of Szczawnica, the headland is an oasis of calm. Thanks to its out-of-the-way location, the place is visited by far fewer tourists than, for example, the Pieniny National Park or the centre of the spa. To make it more pleasant for tourists, there is a beautiful flower arrangement in the centre of the island and benches overlooking the Dunajec River.

  • Rafting on the Dunajec River

100 m from the promontory, there is a lower rafting harbour where the wooden boat trip starting in Sromowce Wyższe or Niżne ends. The place is surrounded by two inns serving traditional dishes.

  • Canoe course

There is also a kayaking track starting at the promontory. It is worth mentioning that it is from Szczawnica that Mateusz Polaczyk comes from - a four-time world vice-champion in canoe slalom!

  • Cycle path

Right at the promontory, there are hiking and cycling trails that lead to Slovakia, where the famous Pieniny Trail begins. It can also be used to reach the promenade in Szczawnica.

  • White House

In the interwar period, there was a guesthouse called the White House on the promontory. It was a charming little building with 12 beds located right on the Dunajec River, which was destroyed during the flood in 1934. Unfortunately, no traces of the building have survived, only a plaque commemorating the history of this place can be found on the Szczawnica side.

White House

In the interwar period there was an accommodation station "White House" on the island, belonging to the Polish Tourist Society. It was a small wooden building with white walls (hence the name) built in 1925 26 by Jan Wochna for his daughter Marta and son-in-law Tadeusz Wolski. In 1933, the main board and Pieniny branch of the Polish Tatra Society took the initiative to create a night shelter on the island. A second building with three rooms, a barn and guest facilities were built next to the "White House". The complex offered a total of 12 beds and was of a higher standard than other surrounding hostels. It was even equipped with its own generator and telephone, which was quite an improvement for the time.

Flood in 1934.

Unfortunately, in July 1934. "White House" was destroyed in a flood. Between 13 and 17 July, more than 50 mm of rain per square metre fell here daily, causing the river level to rise significantly. As a result, the Štiavnica headland was flooded and guests of the Domek had to be evacuated to the Orlica chalet. The guesthouse was never rebuilt again, and now a forest grows in its place.

Flower composition

Although the island is mostly forested, there is a well-kept lawn on the north-east side with a beautiful flower composition in the centre. In addition, a wooden sculpture depicting Anna and Arthur Werner stands on the green carpet, and benches have been erected to allow tourists to relax. The whole area is connected to the mainland by a wooden bridge.
