Czerteż, at 774 m above sea level, is the highest peak of the Pieninek ridge, which is part of the Pieniny Proper. It belongs to the famous Sokola Perć trail and is located between Czertezik and the Burzana Pass, which separates it from Ociemny Wierch. The northern slopes of the peak descend steeply towards the Dunajec River, while the southern slopes descend into the deep and wild valley of the Pieniny Stream. There used to be a clearing near Czertezik, where trees were felled, hence the peak used to be called Czertez or Czertezy, which is reminiscent of the Lemko "czerteż" or "czertiż" meaning felling.
