Możliwe jest kilka dróg. Najciekawszą wydaje się być ta prowadząca przez Zamek Pieniński i Sokolicę aż do Krościenka, co daje możliwość zrobienia pętli, gdy naszą trasę rozpoczęliśmy właśnie stamtąd. Inną możliwością jest zejście do Sromowców Niżnych, a dalej Drogą Pienińską aż do Szczawnicy. Wszystko w zależności od tego, skąd rozpoczęliście podróż.

Trzy Korony is the highest peak in the Central Pieniny mountains. Contrary to what it may seem, it consists not of three, but of five turrets, the highest of which is Okrąglica. It is on this turret that the observation platform is located, from which we can admire the Dunajec Gorge, other Pieniny peaks, and, in good weather, even the Tatra Mountains.

Originally, Trzy Korony was simply called Pieniny. The current name has been in use since 1860 and is related to the shape of the nearby peaks, which can be admired from Okrąglica. They form a crown.

Starting point in Krościenko

The shortest route to the summit

Three Crowns Street
As we mentioned earlier, the most popular route leading to Three Crowns starts in Krościenko, near the Dunajec River. We begin our hike on Three Crowns Street, which reminds us of our destination. From here, at a leisurely pace, you can reach the summit in just over 2 hours, and the route will be filled with breathtaking views and spots where it’s worth stopping for a moment.
St. Roch Chapel
To see the first such spot, we don’t have to look far. It is the oldest chapel in Krościenko – the St. Roch Chapel, located on Three Crowns Street. It was built at the beginning of the 18th century at the initiative of the then parish priest, who wanted to thank the saint for protecting the local population from the plague that was raging in southern Lesser Poland at the time. The chapel is made of brick and plastered, with a rather austere interior, which contains paintings of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Virgin Mary. We take a few minutes to explore, and then we set off on the yellow trail leading to the summit.
Pieniński Stream

A stream with crystal-clear water

After about 30 minutes, we come across the Pieniński Stream, whose valley is one of the wildest places in the Pieniny Mountains. Its name appears in documents as early as the beginning of the 17th century! It is a strictly protected area, and except for a small section near Bajkowy Groń, it is inaccessible to tourists. It is home to rare and protected species of moss, and the valley is home to about 30 species of birds, such as the Alpine Accentor and the Eurasian Nuthatch.
Bajkowy Groń
The southern slopes of the Bajkowy Groń peak border the Pieniński Stream. It is 721 meters above sea level, and its name comes from two small hills located nearby: Bajków and Groń. Two hiking trails meet here: the one from Krościenko, which we are following, and the blue trail leading from Trzy Korony to Szczawnica.

Halfway there

Szopka Pass
After another 30 minutes, we reach a spot where tourists often stop. Szopka Pass is also often called “Praise God!” It is said that this is because of the exclamations made by people during the climb, who find a place to rest here. However, let’s remember that it can be crowded during the tourist season. From the information board, we learn that we still have 45 minutes to go to our destination – Trzy Korony (Three Crowns).

However, before continuing on our way, we should stop for a moment and go to a clearing from which impressive views unfold. From the Szopka clearing, we can see the foothills of the Spisz region and the snow-capped peaks of the Tatra Mountains, which serve as motivation to continue climbing – because we are guaranteed that the views from the summit will be even more beautiful!

Start

Ticket office
The trail from Przełęcz Szopka is not one of the easiest. We can expect many steep climbs and stone steps, which are often damp, requiring travelers to exercise caution. After another 35 minutes, we should reach the ticket office, where fees are collected for entry to the summit. These fees are enforced from April 20 to October 31, and tickets cost 6 PLN (regular ticket) and 3 PLN (reduced ticket).
Metal platform
Once we have finally passed the ticket office, we must be prepared for a long queue to access the metal platform located on Okrąglica. It is therefore worth going to the summit during less popular hours or on weekdays to avoid wasting time waiting. The views are breathtaking. The 500-meter drop and the landscape of the Pieniny Mountains, the Tatras, and the Dunajec Gorge are worth the effort of reaching the very top. We will also see Krościenko, from where we started our hike. The panorama from this spot is particularly attractive in autumn, when we can admire the multicolored landscape of the Pieniny forests.

Many descent options

Pieniny Castle
When considering the return route, we have several options to choose from. One of them is the Pieniny Trail, which leads through Pieniny Castle. Unfortunately, today only its ruins are accessible to visitors, as it was destroyed, most likely in the first half of the 15th century. It was a small castle, with defensive walls measuring 88 meters in length and approximately one meter in thickness. Legend has it that during the third Tatar invasion, St. Kinga hid in it, and she was most likely the one who commissioned its construction. After we become familiar with the history of this place, we can follow the blue trail to Szczawnica or return to the yellow trail leading to Sromowce.
Sromowce
Continuing along the yellow trail to Sromowce, we pass the PTTK “Trzy Korony” mountain hut, where we can take a short break. Finally, after covering approximately 8 km, we reach Lower Sromowce, where we end our hike – what a coincidence! – also on Trzy Koron Street.
