The Central Pieniny, also often referred to as the Pieniny Mountains, is one of the mountain ranges within the Pieniny. It stretches from Niedzica and Czorsztyn to Krościenko and Leśnica. Its highest and one of the most popular peaks is Trzy Korony. However, this area is also famous for a frequently visited, almost iconic pine tree growing on Sokolica. The Pieniny Mountains are undoubtedly the most popular part of the entire Pieniny mountain range among tourists, as they offer ruins of castles in Czorsztyn and Pieniny, Lake Czorsztyńskie itself, and numerous peaks with majestic views, including the Dunajec Gorge.

  • Brother Cyprian…

In the mountains, a legend about Brother Cyprian, who came from the Red Monastery in the 18th century, persists and continues to be told. According to this legend, he supposedly set off from Trzy Korony on a flying machine and flew all the way to the Tatra Mountains.

  • Three Crowns?

In all the documents found, the name “Three Crowns” is referred to as “Crown.” The origin of the current name is unknown, as it has no logical basis, either in tradition or in the shape of the five peaks.

Topography and Terrain Features

The Pieniny Mountains are divided into the Czorsztyn Pieniny, the Trzy Korony massif, and the Pieninki. In total, the mountain range features several dozen peaks and over a hundred rock formations, with a relative height averaging 300-450 meters above the valley floors. The mountains are mainly composed of limestone, which is a type of sedimentary rock. The slopes of the peaks are characterized by significant asymmetry: they are gentle on the north side but steep on the south side and contain many smaller rocks (as seen near the Pieniny Castle). The very steep and high rock cliffs on the Dunajec River side also make a great impression on tourists, and they can be observed during a raft trip.

Tourism

I think it will surprise no one if I point out that, in terms of the number of tourists, the Central Pieniny Mountains rank second in Poland, after the Tatra Mountains. Attractive to tourists are the mountain landscape (numerous peaks), the rich history of the area (including the Pieniny Castle), which is further preserved and protected by the activities of the Pieniny National Park, and the sanatoriums in Szczawnica. It is also worth noting the well-organized accommodation and base for mountain excursions. We cannot forget the already mentioned raft trip down the Dunajec River with the traditional wooden rafts, which is an attraction on a European scale!

A Few Words About the Peaks

I am sure that each of us is familiar with the most popular peaks in the Pieniny Mountains: Trzy Korony and Sokolica, but perhaps it is worth saying a few words about others? For example, about Zamkowa Góra, which is located right next to the Pieniny Castle. It is associated with an extraordinary history, as it was formerly called “Mount St. Kinga” because the princess hid in the castle during the Tatar invasion. In her memory, a grotto dedicated to her is located on the slopes of the mountain. Another peak belonging to the Trzy Korony Massif is Łysina, which, unfortunately, is not open to tourists. One of the greatest natural attractions is one of the last remaining sites in Poland for the Sabine juniper, which grows on the steep south-eastern limestone wall.
