Nowa Góra

Explore Place

People who have ever been to the Pieniny Mountains may associate Nowa Gora from one of their hikes without even knowing its name. As the second highest peak in the Pieniny Proper, it is visible from peaks such as Trzy Korony or Czoło. Apart from that, you can pass it by following the blue trail between Trzy Kopce Pass and Szopka Pass. We can also see it from some sections of the Szopczański Gorge. Unfortunately, Nowa Góra itself is not accessible to tourists, so we can only admire it from afar.

  • Height records

Nowa Góra is the second highest peak in the Pieniny Właściwe and the highest in the Pieniny Czorsztyńskie.

  • Name

Before the peak was called "New Mountain" from 1822, it was named "Black Mountain"

  • Zakoczy Glade

The blue hiking trail Chocho - Szopka Pass (the same as the one mentioned above) leads along the edge of the Zakoczył glade. This clearing is sometimes called "Czerniawa".

  • Appearance

The New Mountain is shaped like a sharp cone with a kinked ridge, emphasising southwards. Most of its surface is covered by forest.

Flora and other curiosities

Nowa Góra has been on Polish maps under its present name since 1822. More than a century later, Professor Stanislaw Kulczynskideveloped a project for a "Pieniny Reserve". His plans were realised and the Pieniny National Park was created, which still takes care of these areas. Thanks to the existence of the park, many plant and animal species have been given an appropriate degree of protection. It was the presence of several such specimens that contributed to the closure of Nowa Góra to visitors. The rare plant species mentioned include hawthorn thistle, moss bicolor, yellowish cocoanut and hill thistle.

In search of the New Mountain, or panorama

As you can see, usually the New Mountain will be nothing more to the tourist than a wall of forest next to the trail or part of a breathtaking panorama, so let's appreciate it for just that. For the sake of this statement, I encourage you to seek out its conical silhouette. Among other things, it is visible from the following peaks: Polica (110°), Babia Góra (105°), Wysoka (285°), Three Crowns (270°). The question that probably comes to mind now is "What are these values given after the names of the peaks?". Well, they are the azimuths in whose direction, in good conditions, a New Mountain will be discernible.
