Built in 1975, the dam met with numerous protests from environmentalists at the time. However, by 1997 it had already protected nearby villages from the Millennium Flood.
Parts of the interior of the power station are available for guided tours.
The dam regulates the height of the Dunajec River in consultation with the rafters' association so that boat trips are possible at all times.
