According to tradition, as recounted by Jan Długosz, the owner of the castle in Czorsztyn in 1246 was Piotr Wydżga, bearing the Janina coat of arms, a nobleman from the Kraków region. He was also the owner of the castles in Rytro, Łącko, and Lemiasz. Historians connect the origins of the castle with the activities of St. Kinga as the Lady of Sądecz.
