The Polish Alps

The Tatra Mountains are the only mountain range in Poland with an alpine character, making them absolutely unique on the country’s map. Their terrain is the result of powerful geological processes and glacial activity, which carved out deep valleys, sharp ridges, and numerous cirques now filled with the crystal-clear water of lakes. Although this area covers a relatively small surface, its diversity – from the gentle, grassy slopes of the Western Tatras to the rugged, granite walls of the High Tatras – can surprise even experienced hikers.

Tatra National Park

This is not just lifeless rock, but above all, a vibrant ecosystem, rigorously protected by the Tatra National Park (TPN). Here, species that cannot be found anywhere else in Poland, such as the Tatra chamois and the marmot, have their last refuges, and in the dense forests of the lower and upper montane zones, brown bears, wolves, and lynx still reign. The flora of the Tatras is equally fascinating – from dwarf mountain pines to rare alpine plants that have adapted to survive in the extremely harsh atmospheric conditions prevailing on the ridges above 2000 meters above sea level.

Highlander Culture

This region is also a unique cultural melting pot, inextricably linked to the Highlander tradition, which has evolved in isolation in the harsh climate for centuries. Traditional shepherding on alpine pastures, although now mainly of cultural significance, has left its mark in the form of shepherd’s huts, oscypek cheese, and a distinctive folklore that still attracts tourists as much as the mountain peaks.
